Cal has seen itself go from a Pac-10 doormat to a conference contender this decade, but that last few years seem to have brought more disappointment than success. The Golden Bears have been highlighted as the most overrated Pac-10 team in terms of actual finish vs. what was predicted. They’ve become a victim of their own success.
The Bears finished a respectable 9-4 a season ago, but it seemed somewhat disappointing against the elevated expectations of Berkeley’s alumni.
September will be difficult with games at Minnesota and Oregon as well as a home rematch versus Maryland. Cal has typically fared well in September, though, and has won three in a row against Oregon.
Early games against Oregon and USC will draw headlines, but it’s November that will define the Bears season. If they can win a home game at Oregon State, only games against Stanford, Arizona and Washington stand in the way of a strong finish.
Look for Cal to contend for the Pac-10 title. Don’t be surprised if they knock off USC at home in an early tilt against a Trojan team still feeling its way around the new season. However, Oregon is a better pick at this point because of its favorable home schedulle.
