2008 was a strange season for Oregon. It featured major lows and highs and the end result was a top ten finish for the first time since 2001-02. The strong finish has heightened expectations for the 2009 campaign, but it won’t be easy.
Oregon faces one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the country. They will start the season by traveling to Boise, ID to play the Broncos on the fabled blue turf. Boise State does not lose at home. They also don’t play teams anywhere near the caliber of this Oregon team, so the first game of Oregon’s season will prove to be interesting especially considering the upset that the Broncos laid on the Ducks a year ago at Autzen Stadium. The game is among the first matchups of the college football season and figures to feature two top 15 teams.
If Boise State isn’t enough, Utah will come to town later in September a year removed from going undefeated and beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Oregon ends a difficult first month with a home matchup against California which was tabbed 2nd in the Pac-10 pre-season media poll. If they get out of the month at 3-1 or 4-0, good things figure to be in store for this season.
Oregon catches the breaks in Pac-10 scheduling (just as they do every odd year) with USC, Cal, Oregon State and Arizona State all at home. The featured matchup with USC that could pair two top ten teams takes place on Halloween night. There is likely no scarier place than Autzen Stadium for the visiting Trojans.
A win here could vault Oregon to the top of the standings and put it in the driver’s sear for a Rose Bowl berth. With the right home schedule and enough question marks on other teams throughout the conference, it’s not out of the question that the Ducks could end the Trojans 7 year reign atop the standings.
