Ladies and gentlemen, hear comes Stanford. You first say the glimpse in 2007 with the stunning win at USC. Then came 2008 where the Cardinal needed just one win in its last three to become bowl eligible, but alas, games against the top of the conference doomed it to a 5-7 season.
Now, Stanford enteres 2009 thinking it can make the leap. The first five games are all winnable, but a loss to Wake Forest is probable. If Stanford starts 4-1, things are going to get real interesting in Palo Alto as the Cardinal tries to get back to a bowl game for the first time since 2001.
November is going to be brutal for the Cardinal as it faces Oregon, USC, Cal and Notre Dame. The Oregon game figures to be pivotal as it is at home against a top tier team that it came just seconds away from knocking off at Autzen Stadium a year ago.
The thought here is that with seven home games and a favorable early schedule, Stanford will make the break-through and join the Pac-10 bowl lineup.
