Season 1 under Rick Neuheisel was one to forget. The Bruins couldn’t capitalize on an early victory over Tennessee and started 1-3 en route to finishing just 4-8. Quarterback play was an achilles heel and while 2009 figures to promise improved play, there are just too many better teams in conference the Bruins to make a serious push.
The start of the season could demoralize any thoughts of a winning record with games at Tennesse and Stanford as well as home games against Kansas State, Oregon and Cal. The game at Stanford figures to be the most winnable conference game and as such, will be critical if the Bruins want to stay in the discussion of top tier teams heading into the second half of the season.
If the Bruins can somehow navigate the start, the schedule softens up but with road games still left at Oregon State and USC, there will be little margin for error if the UCLA plans on rejoining postseason play.
For Rick Neuheisel’s squad, it’s probably not time yet. It could be another long season in Westwood.
